FBC Martinique

Written by

Martinique is the second largest island of the French West Indies at the northernmost of the Windward Caribbean group – otherwise known as the “breezy islands”. The island is 65km long and 31km wide with a central plain (Le Lamentin) and mountains to the north and south, the largest of which is the active volcano Mount Pele at 1,397m. The north of the island (Atlantic side) has tropical rainforests surrounded by pineapple and banana plantations. The coastline is rugged with steep cliffs and volcanic black and grey sand coves. The south of the island (Caribbean side) has an irregular coastline with peninsulas, islets and sandy golden bays and beaches with calmer seas. In the middle of all of this spectacular scenery you will find mangroves, rainforest trails, waterfalls, plantations, wetlands, rolling green hills and a riot of colours.

FBC Martinique is located at the Pointe du Bout on the tip of a semi-island facing the capital, Fort de France.

There is so much to see and do here, hiking and biking, the golf courses are world class, the underwater world has an abundance of marine life and interesting wreck diving can be found on the island. The food (and indeed the whole island) is a mix of African, French, Creole, Caribbean and West Indian influences – which makes for rich and interesting tastes and experiences all round!

The charm of Martinique is hard to deny. With warm weather and warm water all year round, superb cuisine, incredible landscapes, stunning beaches and that laid back Caribbean vibe you know after your first Ti Punch that you made the perfect decision!

WE RECOMMEND:

Fort de France – The capital of Martinique with narrow winding streets and colourful markets

La Pagerie – Birth place of Napoleons Empress Josephine – a popular attraction

Mount Pele – Worth the climb for the spectacular views

Volcano Museum – Learn about the 1902 Mt. Pele eruption which destroyed a city and its’ entire population – except for one man!

Rum Distilleries – Some of the best rums in the world are produced here and tasting is always offered!

Lamentin Plain – Walk through rain forests and cool down bathing in waterfalls

HMS Diamond Rock – Gets a 12 gun salute from passing British war ships!

Windsurfing Martinique

Written by

Spot

The north east trade winds accelerate across the plains of Lamentin and blow onshore at the launch area and at 90 degrees to the whole sailing area. The main wind period is from the beginning of December until the end of April, but FBC Martinique is open all year round and you can expect some great conditions in June and July which can be a perfect time to travel as hotels and flights are so much cheaper. There is a launching area in front of the center (30 m wide) with waist high flat water and soft sand under foot. This area is slightly protected from the wind and is excellent for entry level and kids. Outside this area is where the fun really begins!

The sailing area is large and safe with easy freeride conditions (flat water and bump & jump). You sail from the center in the direction of a deep green mangrove. Just before this (about 400 m from the center) is a shallow (waist high) sand bank, perfect for waterstart and jibe training, or even for taking a well deserved break!

A long wooden jetty runs from the main center building out to the sailing area and it’s a great place for watching the action and taking pictures as your friends fly past!

Last but not least, and should you get worried about inactive holidays, the center also has a powerful motorboat and are trained in all sorts of tow-in sports such as waterskiing and of course wakeboarding – you will have NO excuses for being lazy during your holiday!

Instruction

FBC Martinique teach all levels of windsurfing in a safe and friendly environment. They prefer to do their coaching in an exclusive way: only on a one-on-one basis, ensuring speedy progress, dedicated attention and value for money!

Windsurfing Beginners benefit from a wind shadow at the launch area where the water is calm and waist high with a sandy bottom. The wooden jetty on one side and the curve of the bay ensure a completely safe learning experience. Further out the wind speed increases and becomes more constant blowing at 90 degrees to the sailing area. The flat water and bump and jump conditions are superb for stance work and manoeuvre training, and the sand bank provides either a welcome rest or the chance to nail down your waterstarts and jibes.

CERTIFICATIONS: FFV (windsurfing)

LANGUAGES: Courses are held by an experienced qualified instructor in English, French and basic German.

SPECIAL PACKAGES: Video coaching available upon request (at a supplement)

Kitesurfing Martinique

Written by

Spot

Kitesurfers will find a dream playground.

The FBC Martinique center has an immense kiting area surrounded by beautiful greenery and mangroves, with a combination of flat water and chops, great for improving your level, practicing advanced New School tricks or simply enjoying super long freeride runs.

The launch can be tricky as the area is very small and the wind blows onshore here, but the team is always on hand to help, and less experienced kiters can be taken by boat to launch outside and make the best of the wind direction and safety offered. The team of expert kiters at FBC Martinique will look after you well both on land and on the water and are just waiting to share their enthusiasm with you, as well as providing top tips. You can even discover the joy of Kitefoiling at the center and learn this new riding dimension in all safety, so don’t wait any longer!

Last but not least, and should you get worried about inactive holidays, the center has a powerful motorboat and are trained in all sorts of tow-in sports such as waterskiing and of course wakeboarding – you will have NO excuses for not having mastered that move during your holiday.

All year round the water is warm and so is the wind – you can’t ask for much more!
